Even more snow on Friday! It only lasted for an hour but it was perfect because I was home and warm in bed with a fire going and the dogs tucked in beside me. I watched siskins and goldfinches vying over feeder holes while house finches, California towhees, titmice, white-crowned sparrows and a lone white-breasted nuthatch took turns next door at the seed feeder. (The jays were busy at the front feeder so not too much commotion). Noticed a large bird in the tree down the hill and realized it was a red-tail hawk. Don’t get many of those in our chapparal hideaway. It flew a moment later and I saw it was a juvenile, probably edged out by older birds into this marginal territory. Being a teenager is tough for every species.
